Mallet Finger/Extensor Tendon Repair

Symptoms

  • You feel a pop or snap when the top of your finger strikes something or the tendon is cut
  • The top of the finger is in a bent position
  • The finger will not straighten

Surgery

  • If the skin is not cut and there is no fracture the finger will be treated with a splint
  • If the skin is cut the tendon may be repaired surgically
  • If there is bone pulled off with the tendon you may need the bone repaired

After Care

  • No exercise for 48 hours
  • Leave your dressings dry and intact until you return to clinic
  • If you shower keep the hand and arm above the level of the shoulder out of the water
  • Take simple over the counter pain relief like Paracetamol or Nurofen for 48 hours or more for any discomfort
  • No driving until you are out of splint at 12 weeks
